Taste the World Event
January 19 – April 5th, 2016
Everyone knows one of the best parts of travelling is the food you get to try along the way. Well, what if I told you you could travel the world through food, right from our own city?
Radius Restaurant is running a ‘Taste the World’ prix fixe event until April 5th. Each Tuesday they’ll feature a different location and the chef will serve up prix fixe meals for $35.00 per person (which include an appetizer, entree and dessert) from the location theme of the night.
Radius invited me out to try one of these Taste the World evenings. While I was tempted to try the Italian night (I love all things Italian!), I tried to go out of my element and went with France. I brought Jonny along with me, read below to find out what we thought of the event.
Atmosphere
Radius has changed quite a bit since first opening. They have renovated extensively since the casual cafe they once had (at least on the one side). Now they’ve got separate levels, chandeliers and a full wine wall. It’s a classy place to impress a date!
Food Reviews
This was one of the best meals we both have had in a long time, and Heather’s favorite meal she’s ever had at Radius. We tried:
Appetizer
Foie-ssant
Buttered croissant, pan seared foie gras, strawberry jam and microgreen salad
This was the dish that was the most out of our comfort zone, since neither of us had tried (or wanted to try) foie gras. But that’s what Taste the World Tuesdays is all about – trying new things!
The way they seared the foie gras made it a lot easier for a first-time eater to try. Plus the sweet strawberry jam was a pleasant addition to the strong foie gras. We both enjoyed it, despite any reservations we may have had.
Entrees
Heather tried Poule au Pot
Stuffed chicken supreme, fondant potato, haricot vert, broth
I loved everything about this dish. The chicken was cooked to perfection and had a little bit of saltiness from the stuffing. The potato was soft, but seared on the outside. I’ve never seen potatoes cooked like this before, but I need to learn how to do it because it was FAB. The green beans were semi crisp, so it added a nice texture to the meal. Ahhh…writing this brings me back, and I wish I could enjoy it right now.
Jonny tried Duck Confit
Duck confit with white bean cassoulet, roquefort cheese, sweet potato, house smoked bacon
The duck tasted like it was slow cooked to perfection the night before. The beans were amazing…slightly sweet with a nice touch of the tart creamy roquefort cheese on the side.
Dessert
Apple Tarte Tatin
French vanilla ice cream, caramel, whipped cream
This was more Jonny’s thing than Heather’s, but we both enjoyed it! The caramel sauce was quite strong and seemed like it might have some sort of alcohol/rum in it? Though we don’t know for sure. The sugar decoration was a really neat touch to the plate. (Speaking of that, didn’t they plate everything so marvelously?!)
We also tried a Hamilton favourite – The Hamilton Brewery‘s Blue Collar Ale. I love this drink – it’s my go-to at any restaurants that carry it! -H
