There’s a new kid in town! In the former Bryan’s / Bryce’s Fish and Chips on Ottawa Street North, Hammerhead’s on Ottawa is putting a brand new spin on the classic fish and chips.
Currently, Hammerhead’s is a little take-out joint specializing in hot seafood dishes to go. In addition to the original fish and chips options (yes, they also do the classics!), they also have a changing menu of new seafood creations, such as: Prawn Poutine, Sri Lankan Fish Curry over Rice, Szechuan Calamari and Acadian Seafood Chowder.
Though they do have a few high seats at the front window, I would recommend taking it to go. It’s a really small space meant for take-out food, and you’ll end up leaving like fried food if you eat in. Trust me, I know from experience. 😅
On my first visit, I ate in with other food friends (I’m Mad Hungry, Henry’s Culture and Rebuild Hamilton) so we got to share and try a variety of menu items. We are a giving bunch, haha.
We ate:
Prawn Poutine – $12.00 – This was a saucy dish, piled high with shrimp, a tomato pepper-esque sauce and covered in shredded cheese…(parmesan, I think?). The fries were perfect, and the amount of shrimp in the dish was really impressive. Plus, this is totally an instagrammable meal. Tasty and beautiful!
Fish and Chips (Haddock, 1 piece) with Tartar Sauce – $12.00 – The fish flaked perfectly, and had an ideal amount of crispy breading on it. The tartar sauce was a total must imo, it was the perfect dip for both the fries and the fish. You can order this meal in a variety of fish types (Example: Lingcod, Haddock and Halibut, and in different #s of pieces – 1, 2 or 6). The Fish and Chips comes with one extra side and then additional sides – like mushy peas or coleslaw, pictured in the image – are $1.00. Pretty good options if you ask me!
Sri Lankan Fish Curry over Rice – $10.00 – Quite possibly my favourite dish of the day and good value for the money. The spice level of this was perfect, and it was really flavourful. Loved it!
I didn’t get to try the Szechuan Calamari this time, but it sounds so good – I think I’ll have to go back for it next time it’s available.
If you want to try a little bit of everything, there’s also their Platter, complete with Haddock, Scampi, Scallops and Chips.
Over the next few months, Hammerhead’s is hoping to transfer more into a fresh seafood counter, and offer the hot foods as a side offering. But with dishes like that, I could see their hot dishes becoming a huge hit in the neighbourhood!
